Hi Class,
I think too often students are frustrated and give up (especially in math courses).  Do you have any suggestions for those students that are frustrated within the course?  How were you able to overcome your frustration and keep going?

This is certainly true. You need math the figure out practically everything in our everyday lives. I cannot think of one thing that does not involve some sort of math. It just depends on whether you use graphs, charts, equations or just simple arithmetic. The two most important subjects to learn in school is math and reading skills. You cannot get anywhere in life without learning the basics.

I do not have any children yet, but when I do I will tell them how important math is in your life especially when you get older and have a career. In any position, you need math and reading skills to understand the tasks of certain jobs. It is far easier to grasp the concept of mathematics when you are young, as I am finding out now with this class. When I was in school, math was my hardest subject but I approached it with a positive attitude and I tried to make it fun and that actually helped me back then. I really concentrated on each problem and my memory was much better than it is now because now with the same attitude and work ethic it seems I am not grasping the concept of some problems. Until taking this class, I never really knew how much we use algebra in our everyday lives. The graphs and charts are something that anyone can use to determine the increase and decrease of certain products and the trends that are involved. I would tell my child that math is probably the most important subject to learn in school.

I do think she should have checked the math for herself because as we know if her drawer is off she will have it deducted from her pay. $24.53 is a huge amount of money to not have in your pocket. With gas at 4 dollars a gallon that is 6 gallons of gas. Being that everything is electronic anymore, people do not know the basics and a lot of people working cash registers really do not need to be behind the machine. I remember when I worked at Salvation Army, many years ago and we had to do everything manually on a receipt book with a real pencil and there were no calculators. Although you did have a tax slip and a discount slip if you could not figure the change boy did the customers get angry. Sometimes they would as the clerk, “Why are you working the register?”

With so many jobs and careers out there that depend on mathematical skills, it is imperative that you have the skills necessary to succeed in these fields. Math is used more after you graduate from high school and college than it has ever been before. There are more uses for it in our world today than when I graduated back in 1986. Tradesmen use estimates in order to land the job and they depend on their math skills to help them; technicians read measuring devices and they have to interpret codes in their job every day; managers need math skills in order to organize employee schedules and determine productivity; medical doctors and pharmacists need to know the proper dosages of medicines per patient’s weight; and computer programmers need to know how to set up codes and software for businesses. There are so many reasons for you to succeed in every level of math that you can. Today’s society depends on it.

Good answer!  When I was High School i use to ask my teachers out of frustration what the point of math was.  It was not untill later on in life that I realize it was skill that would follow me.  Math is used to balance out our checkbooks or even shopping.  When we shop we sometimes use math to figure out our change, tax or even sales prices.  When we take vacations or do car pool, math is used plan the trip.  Just by checking the time we are using math.
