“U.S. Customs” Please respond to the following:

  • Imagine you own a small computer hardware company. From the e-Activity, design an overall strategy to set up an import function in your company. Determine the two essential elements your plan must have and why you selected these two.

1) Identify computer components that will be imported and ensure all required forms are completed and submitted prior to purchase

2) Declare items for commercial use

3) Establish a shipping method

4) Identify if a customs broker will be required

5) Ensure parts are being purchased from a reputable source that is trustworthy.

Of these 5 steps I feel that steps 3 and 5 would be most important for importing computer hardware products. A cost effective shipping method must be established to ensure that parts will be shipped correctly and the cost will not outweigh the value of the items. Step 5 is extremely important because buying from an unreliable source will cause fines and penalties for false or misleading information to fall on the company.

  • Few regulations exist that govern the import or export of computer software across the Internet. Speculate how you think regulations could be put in place for importing and exporting computer software.

Establishing a special division for dealing with such software would be beneficial in combating wrongful use of the software. Declarations, and forms would also be effective in identifying software being imported or exported across the Internet.

             Question 3=

“The CBP” Please respond to the following:

  • Discuss how the CBP Account Management initiative changes how business and the U.S. CBP interact and why you feel these changes were necessary.
  • As a member of senior management, assess how you would coordinate the risk management policies of the corporation with the CBP to manage import supply chain activities.

         Question 4=

Discuss how the CBP Account Management initiative changes how business and the U.S. CBP interact and why you feel these changes were necessary.

As a member of senior management, assess how you would coordinate the risk management policies of the corporation with the CBP to manage import supply chain activities.

The CBP account management initiative is a program that was started by the Customs Border and Patrol. This platform is an interaction between an account manager at the CBP and the particular business. One of the major benefits to this program is that the account manager deals with the business not on a transaction by transactions basis but more from an account based concept. In essence this account manager is the point of contact for the business. This program streamlines the communication process between the business and the CBP. Businesses that are a part of this program receive advanced notice of policy changes as well as customs programs.  I believe these changes were needed because this allows companies to be more compliant based on the communication efficiency of the CBP and the business.

If I were in senior management and was delegated the duty of coordinating the risk management policies between the CBP and the organization I would first ensure that the communication process between the two organizations is effective and efficient. Next I would take full advantage of all available resources by combining programs (Cook, Alston, & Raia, 2012, p277).  Finally I would ensure that there is a responsibility and accountability structure in place to make sure that if something goes wrong the problem can be handled in a quick and efficient manner.
