This writer will review a current study that was conducted in a forensic clinical setting by also focusing on the key “takeaways” of the study and how the findings may be used by a forensic psychology professional in a forensic clinical setting. The article this writer has chosen is “Aggression Toward Forensic Evaluators: A Statewide Survey.” According to the article written by Leavitt, Presskreischer, Maykuth & Grisso (2006), there is an increasing body of literature regarding violence toward mental health professionals in a clinical setting, however little is known about the frequency of assaults forensic professionals.

The findings of the article were significate regarding abuse, psychologically much more so than physical abuse. The findings conclude that among forensic evaluators physical injury was minimal, yet emotional distress was pronounced. Interestingly the study found no more risk of aggressive behavior in the forensic context than the no forensic context and that clinicians’ concerning their safety may be somewhat misplaced (Leavitt et al., 2006). These findings however do address concerns of emotional distress.

Many clinicians who claim to have been emotionally abused by their clients report an increased sense of vulnerability and fear. Clinicians have also voiced symptoms of longer term distress in the form of PTSD and lack of motivation in working with forensic clientele (Leavitt et al., 2006). According to the article “Aggression Toward Forensic Evaluators: A Statewide Survey” in the mid 1980’s, the Massachusetts legislature authorized several departments to develop criteria for the training and certification of Psychiatrist and Forensic Evaluators who performed court ordered evaluations. The survey was a self-report measure, all problems inherent in an individual’s perception should be considered when evaluating findings (Leavitt et al., 2006). Forensic psychologists can use the information gathered to gain greater insight into the population worked with.
