Week 2 DQ 2 Response to classmate Marta Grice, statistics homework help

  • Independent variable = Paleo Diet
  • Condition A = No change in diet
  • Condition B = Eating only a Paleo diet
  • Dependent variable = Weight loss
  • How do you know this DV is measured on a continuous scale?

Weight measurement is an interval scale, and has an absolute zero point (Gravetter &

Wallnau, 2013).

  • How would you word the null hypothesis for your sample study?

H0 predicts that the Paleo diet has no effect on weight loss for the population.

  • How would you word the alternative hypothesis for your sample study?

H1 predicts that the Paleo diet does have an effect on weight loss.

  • What alpha level would you set to test your hypothesis? Why?

An alpha level of 0.5 would be set to test the hypothesis. As the participants have

agency and will not be monitored continuously, they may not follow the Paleo diet

exclusively during the trial. This would account for extreme-low probability values in

which no weight was lost on the diet. There are also those who may lose much more

weight than the other participants in the trail, whose results would also be an extreme

low-probability value. A similar study involving weight loss also set the alpha level

at 0.5 (Welsh, Sherwood, VanWormer, Hotop, & Jeffrey, 2009). Gravetter and Wallnau

(2013) assert that alpha levels are seldom set greater than 0.5.
