When planning an experiment, researchers can set their alpha level to what they want. The most frequent value used is 5%, or 5 in 100 probability that your result is achieved by accident. The lower the alpha, the higher the significance your findings has in order to have an accurate result. For example, if there’s a possibility of death or serious injury or disease we want to make the level smaller. When you have a high alpha level the chance of having an error is raised. Drug companies use a much stricter alpha level when conducting research on new medications. The research must be significant enough to benefit society. Therefore, the alpha level is set low to decrease the possibility of obtaining a Type 1 error or rejecting the null hypothesis. Some situations in which you might accept a higher level is when the research has no significance on death or injury but the research can prove the theory that is being conducted. For example, we can say that all coffee drinkers prefer dark roast over medium roast, a higher alpha level can be used to say that all coffee drinkers prefer dark roast over medium roast
